Thorn Site, Merthyr Tydfil

Hammersons appointed The Urbanists were alongside Powell Dobson Architects to prepare a landscape design scheme for commercial development in Merthyr Tydfil. The Urbanists prepared a landscape proposals plan which set out general design and landscape principles and objectives that can be taken forward in greater detail at the detailed design stage. Those principles are as follows:

  • The landscape design and layout responds to the proposed building and car parking area, providing an aesthetically pleasing boundary treatment along its perimeter.

  • In order to sensibly respond to the existing designations (SAM and SINC) and the historical and socio-economic background of the site, the proposals incorporate a ‘Heritage Trail’ along the eastern boundary. This will be a recreational footpath linking to the existing pedestrian routes and adjacent SINC and Taff Trail including a viewing platform to enhance cross valley views and visual links to Cyfarthfa Castle

  • The material palette has been carefully chosen to relate to the site’s background and provide visual interest.

  • The planting intends to create a buffer between the car park and the SAM so users can feel as they were walking along a natural environment instead of a car park.

  • Feature planting and paving at entrance will provide a sense of arrival to welcome potential users.

  • Soft and hard specification has been checked against BREEAM requirements.

  • The landscape response has been informed by the LVIA chapter in terms of mitigation of impacts on relevant views.
