AMHU, Llandough Hospital

The Urbanists were appointed on behalf of Laing O’Rourke and the University Health Board to provide planning consultancy services for the new Adult Meantal Health Unit (AMHU) building at University Hospital Llandough, Cardiff.

The scheme comprises a two storey building of some 20,000 sq m containing 135 in-patient beds within 10 wards, private recreation space, plus a new concourse building for the existing hospital complex.

The proposed development followed a multi-disciplinary approach to the design process from the outset.  This allowed early and due consideration of all of the planning issues and considerations which could impact on the project.  Active engagement of the LPA (cross-departmentally) was undertaken during this stage which contributed to this, and also assisted in the determination of the application following formal submission.

Full planning permission was granted in November 2012.  The Urbanists are retained through the post-planning stages to manage the discharge of planning conditions and provide planning advice as needed.

The planning permission for the AMHU complex follows the earlier planning permissions for the replacement decked car park, engineering and access works, which enable this project to proceed.  The two projects together required a comprehensive and robust planning strategy to be prepared and managed.  Powell Dobson Architects are the project architects
