In July 2010, The Urbanists created Town Improvement Grant (TIG) Design Guidelines for Aberystwyth Town Centre on behalf of Welsh Government. This acted as guidance for building owners or lease holders who wished to apply for grant funding to improve the exterior of their commercial premises.
Following on from this, The Urbanists were approached by Ceredigion County Council (CCC) to write a more comprehensive Supplementary Planning Guidance document for shopfronts and commercial facades in Aberystwyth Town Centre. On the 23rd May 2013 Ceredigion County Council formally adopted this SPG.
The Urbanists worked closely with CCC and Cadw to ensure that the guidance was specific to Aberystwyth’s heritage and character, particularly as the majority of the town centre is within a Conservation Area.
The SPG is a comprehensive and thorough guide which aims to drastically improve the quality of commercial building enhancements in the town centre. It sets out exactly what is and is not acceptable, providing absolute clarity for applicants and enforcing the role of planning officers.
We are happy to see that the design guidance documents are resulting in a number of attractive shop fronts currently popping up around the town centre.
