The Urbanists have been working in partnership with Welsh Government (WG) and Ceredigion County Borough Council (CCBC) to explore the opportunities to invest in the quality of public spaces in Aberystwyth town centre. A key challenge facing WG and CCBC was in deciding where to focus public realm improvements and regeneration initiatives so that they would have high impact. A further challenge facing the WG and CCBC, once appropriate locations were identified, was to determine how the implementation of the initiatives would help to protect and enhance the distinctive character of Aberystwyth town centre.

Our professional approach and expertise in street design and placemaking meant that a clear framework for investment was created which reflected the character and history of the town centre.
Rather than just take a design-led approach we added value for our client by exploring some of the key principles which will affect the implementation of the schemes. We feel that rather than just looking for the appropriate locations to make capital investments in Aberystwyth town centre we helped to explore the potential character of those investments and the factors that needed to be considered to ensure initial concepts could be translated into effective implementation.
