We were commissioned to lead a multidisciplinary team of consultants including property advisers and engineers to examine the redevelopment potential of several key sites in the historic seaside village of Saundersfoot near Tenby. The sites all orientate towards the resort’s harbour and beach, and the consultants were asked to explore how the sites could help to improve not only the connections to these amenities but also to see how they could be used to encourage the various landowners to work together to improve the quality of retail and other services in the heart of the village.
As well as identifying a range of new commercial development opportunities the study has demonstrated how the car parking and vehicular circulation in the village centre can be modifi ed to help the resort operate more effectively in the high season, and shown how by creating a range of fl exible pedestrian orientated spaces close to the waterfront can help to broaden its appeal and attraction. The strategy has helped the client group and the local community see the real potential of the resort so that it can take a step change and increase visitation in the ‘shoulder’ and off peak visitor periods to try and make Saundersfoot a ‘year round’ destination which can reinvigorate the local economy.
