Maesteg Market & Town Centre

The Urbanists were commissioned in 2009 by Bridgend County Borough Council to prepare a design strategy for the improvement of the environment around Maesteg Town Hall including the Maesteg Market.

The study area for this commission formed the fourth phase of public realm improvements in the Town Centre which have been implemented to update and upgrade the Town Centre and strengthen its appeal as a retail and service centre.

The Urbanists developed proposals to improve the physical appearance of the bus station, the outdoor market and the riverside, along with considerations of how the right mix of activity can be generated. A key part of the renewal of this area was the conceptual re-design of the permanent outdoor market to accommodate events and a visiting market.

The proposals were presented to stakeholders including Councillors and traders as they developed and a public exhibition was held to present the draft proposals.

The Urbanists concept was developed and taken forward by Bridgend County Borough Council and the Market Square has now been fully implemented.
